This work is a look at the challenge of painting the constantly changing colors and textures of the Great Plains. The images depict the dynamic interaction between the land and sky. There is the peace of quiet evenings hot afternoons, or brisk winter days, the tension of approaching fronts or storms.
In addition to biographical information, author Terry Barkley chronicles the development of works from two thematic touring shows, and one general touring show. Darling based the shows on trails that crossed the plains and the major rivers of Nebraska. 51 paintings are presented from 3 touring art exhibits: “Eight Rivers and the Land” landscapes along eight major rivers in Nebraska, “Red Roads and Black” portions of historic trails across the Nebraska plains, and “Views of the Central Plains” a collection of landscape paintings in and around Nebraska.
